[ Technical summary ]

Graphite tongs, jaws, and inserts grip the glass part while it is still hot and its surface is sensitive to any contact. Graphite allows gripping without sticking, and by drawing less heat at the contact point than metal it avoids the local shock that cracks the part. It is used in the hot end of container lines, in technical glass, and in the workshop — as complete tongs or as inserts replaced on a metal tool.
