[ Technical summary ]

An abrasive belt loses effectiveness when removed material lodges between the grains: the abrasive loads up, stops cutting, and starts generating frictional heat, which burns the workpiece and shortens belt life. A graphite lubricant reduces that parasitic friction and makes it harder for residue to adhere, so the grit keeps cutting for longer and the surface temperature stays lower.
