[ Technical summary ]

Seed treated with fungicide or insecticide coatings becomes tacky, and its passage through the planter meter stops being regular, which alters seeding density. Graphite is added to the seed hopper in small quantities to reduce that friction: it coats the grain, improves flowability, and reduces wear on meter components. It is common practice in precision mechanical planting.
