Original and equivalent grades from international graphite manufacturers

When a drawing or purchase order cites a grade from an international graphite manufacturer, purchasing faces a practical decision: import the nominal grade, wait on foreign stock, or evaluate an original and/or equivalent grade that sustains the process with nearby supply.

The problem: a brand code without the process

An international catalog code alone does not describe temperature, atmosphere, geometry, or failure history in your plant. Asking for “the same grade” without those data can stretch imports or open the door to an improvised substitute.

The useful path is the other way around: process need → critical properties → available original grade or justified equivalent.

• Say whether you can run a controlled trial
• Separate “must be identical on paper” from “must fulfill the function”
• State urgency and whether you prioritize immediate local delivery

Limitations and transparency

• An equivalent is a technical proposal, not a legal brand identity
• We do not publish universal cross-manufacturer substitution tables as absolute truth
• Two “close” grades can differ in lots, impregnation, or machinability
• If your process cannot accept a trial, the right path may be insisting on the nominal grade

Do you rank MERSEN against SGL or Toyo against POCO?

No. We do not rank manufacturers. We start from your specification and the properties your process requires.

Does an equivalent guarantee the same result?

It guarantees a proposal based on properties and use. Plant results are confirmed under your conditions; that is why we ask for data and, when needed, a trial.

Can you quote from the manufacturer name alone?

That is a weak starting point. Without a code, datasheet, or sample, the recommendation is more tentative.
