What is the difference between carbon and graphite?

Although both are carbon-based, their structure and industrial use are not interchangeable.

  • Mineral carbon / cokes / anthracite — used as carbon sources, reductants, fillers, or process inputs depending on grade and particle size.
  • Graphite — crystalline structure (or synthetic graphitized material) with lubricity, thermal/electrical conductivity, and high-temperature stability that make it useful in parts, electrodes, molds, and lubricants.

In general commercial language, “carbon” often includes petroleum coke, calcined needle coke, green coke, metallurgical coke, and anthracite. “Graphite” covers natural forms (crystalline/flake, amorphous, and vein) and synthetic grades produced after carbonization and graphitization.

How we approach sales (not catalog-only)

ESGRAF positions as a specialist and advisor: we listen to the process challenge, compare grades and formats, and justify the recommendation. That matters when:

  • A drawing calls for an international grade and you need local continuity
  • The storeroom has extruded stock but the part needs isomolded material
  • Purchasing orders powder “mesh X” without knowing if it is natural, synthetic, or micronized
  • A part already failed and nobody documented atmosphere, load, or grain orientation

In those cases, selling carbon or graphite without technical context only moves material; it does not solve the plant problem.

From block to part: the same supplier

Many orders start as “I need a block” and end as “I need the finished bushing.” Having inventory and CNC in García avoids shifting risk to a second shop that does not control the grade. If your plant machines in-house, we quote semi-finished formats; if you prefer a finished part, we work from a drawing or sample.

Limitations to consider

Performance depends on grade, grain orientation, temperature, load, pressure, speed, and operating environment. Selection should be confirmed for your actual process conditions. A “carbon” product does not automatically replace a precision technical graphite grade, or the reverse.
