Hot forging die with a graphite lubricating coating
Lubrication applications

Hot-forming lubrication

Graphite lubrication of metal parts during hot bending, cutting, or stamping, to reduce marks, sticking, and thermal bounce.

Hot bending, cutting, and stamping lubrication

Also known as: Graphite lubricant for hot forming · Hot-stamping release agent · Paint for hot bending · Hot-cutting lubrication

Graphite film for hot bending, cutting, and stamping.

[ Technical summary ]

In hot forming the part and the tool are hot. A liquid lubricant evaporates or bounces; a graphite film stays and reduces friction, marks, and sticking. Closed-die forging and cold stamping are separate records. Tool temperature and application method are set by the press.

Each process needs a specific product and application method. ESGRAF selects the solution according to temperature, material, load, cycle, and application method.

[ Problem it solves ]

Lubricate hot bending, cutting, or stamping without the lubricant bouncing or evaporating before contact.

Processes

  • Hot stamping
  • Hot bending and cutting

Operating conditions

  • Hot tool and part
  • Repeated thermal cycles

When it is suitable

  • The liquid lubricant bounces or evaporates on the hot tool
  • There are marks or sticking in hot forming
  • The die wears with the thermal cycle

When it may not be suitable

  • The process is cold drawing or cold stamping
  • The part tolerates no black residue and there will be no wash
  • The surface tolerates no black residue and there will be no cleaning stage

Process challenges

  • Thermal bounce of the lubricant
  • Marks on the hot part
  • Die wear from thermal cycling

Advantages

  • Film that stays on a hot tool
  • Reduces marks and sticking
  • Eases hot release

Limitations

  • Does not replace closed-die forging as an application
  • The coating wears with the cycle
  • May generate vapours when applied hot, depending on the product
