Carbron products: key to improve industrial processes

Published on 10/15/2020· Updated on 7/22/2026

Carbon is one of the main elements of which the living organic matter of the planet is composed. From it derives coal, a sedimentary rock very rich in carbon, black in color and which is mainly used as a fossil fuel as part of coal-derived products.

Carbron products: key to improve industrial processes

Due to its specific characteristics and properties, as well as its abundance in nature, coal is widely used to improve industrial processes and there are countless products derived from coal.

Main applications in industry

Some of its main applications in different industries and commonly used coal-derived products are:

  • Electricity generator
  • Fuel in thermal power plants
  • Steel production
  • Liquid fuel generation
  • Cement manufacture
  • Reducer in the iron and steel industry
  • Preservative
  • Water filtration
  • Solvents

In the industry we can find a great variety of products derived from mineral coal such as citric acid, acetic acid, methanol, ammonia, polyurethanes, etc.

Industrial process improvement

Coal as such and coal-derived products are widely used in various industrial processes and the advantages of this are immense. For example, coal is currently responsible for the generation of approximately 25% of the primary energy consumed worldwide.

If we talk about electrical energy, coal produces 40% of the energy produced worldwide. That is why its applications in different industries is more than necessary: it is vital.

For example, iron ores are mixed with coal to obtain sweet iron and steel, fundamental raw materials. In addition, it is also used for heating and domestic food preparation.

Types of coals according to their process

There are four types of coals depending mainly on their carbonization process (pressure and temperature): anthracite, hard coal, peat and lignite.

Anthracite is commonly used as a filter medium at the domestic or industrial level but is also used as a fuel. Ammonia, coke, natural gas and tar are obtained from the dry distillation of hard coal.

Coke, on the other hand, is mainly used in the iron and steel industry for iron and steel metallurgy.

Coal is formed in nature through various transformations of plant remains that accumulate in ponds or swampy places. The process is called carbonization and requires long time intervals as well as specific pressures and temperatures.

At we have different products and solutions derived from charcoal and graphite, with which we are able to supply a number of industries. Schedule an appointment with one of our consultants to implement graphite in your industrial processes.

Limitations to consider

Performance depends on graphite grade, grain orientation, temperature, load, pressure, speed, and operating environment. Material selection should be confirmed for your actual process conditions.

Information needed for a quote

To guide selection or prepare a quote, ESGRAF typically needs:

  • Application and operating conditions (temperature, atmosphere, load).
  • Dimensions, technical drawing, or CAD file when applicable.
  • Required quantity.
  • Requested grade or material currently in use.
  • Observed issue with the previous part or lubricant, if any.

Spheroidal graphite cast iron - in which industries is it needed?

Cast irons are a group of ferrous alloys that have a large number of properties and have above 2% carbon. In these cases the carbon does not dissolve completely in the iron and solidifies in the form of graphite or iron carbide. One of the types is spheroidal graphite cast iron or nodular cast iron.

Anisotropic conductivity of graphite: conductor and insulator by direction

Graphite is not a uniform dielectric: it conducts well in the basal plane and behaves like an insulator perpendicular to the layers. That anisotropy explains its role in EDM, brushes, and thermal components.
