Ordering “graphite powder” without a mesh is like ordering a bolt without a thread size. In lubrication, foundry work, release agents, batteries, or additives, particle size changes dispersion, coverage, apparent conductivity, and mixing behavior.

The problem: the wrong mesh fouls the process

Powder that is too coarse can settle, scratch surfaces, or give uneven coverage. Powder that is too fine can dust off, agglomerate, or change suspension rheology. On the plant floor it shows up as “the lubricant stopped working” or “the additive will not disperse,” even when fixed carbon looks similar.

The fix starts by separating graphite type from particle size, not only price per kilo.

What “mesh” means for graphite powder

In industry, mesh describes particle size through sieves: a higher mesh number usually means a finer particle. Ranges in microns (µm) are also specified, especially for micronized grades.

  • Coke and anthracite — when the process needs mineral carbon with defined particle size, not necessarily crystalline graphite.

The right choice combines morphology + purity (fixed carbon, ash, moisture) + mesh.

How to choose mesh by application

Use these qualitative cues — always confirm against your process:

If you already have a mesh that works, include it in the quote along with the previous supplier or datasheet. Matching performance is safer than “approximating” by mesh alone.

Sometimes powder is not used alone: it enters greases, suspensions, or graphite paints. Then the carrier (water, oil, grease, wax, resin) and concentration matter as much as mesh. Limitations

  • Mesh alone does not define the grade: fixed carbon, moisture, and ash change the result.
  • Two powders with the same nominal mesh can differ in size distribution (cut width).
  • Damp or contaminated storage changes behavior even when the bag lists the correct mesh.
  • Certificates of analysis are confirmed on request by grade; do not assume another brand’s values.

  • Required mesh or µm range (or a sample/datasheet of the current material)
  • Fixed carbon, moisture, or ash limits if your specification sets them

  • Temperature or chemical media if the powder enters a thermal process
  • Quantity and replenishment frequency

FAQ

Which mesh should I request if I have no specification?

Describe the application and, if possible, send a sample or photo of the current powder. ESGRAF helps narrow commercial ranges; do not invent a number just because it “sounds fine.”

Is micronized always better than a coarse mesh?

No. Finer powder disperses better in many formulations, but it can be harder to handle, more expensive, or unnecessary in foundry or coarse lubrication.

Natural or synthetic powder?

It depends on purity, morphology, and cost. Synthetic is often sought when purity and control matter; natural flake or amorphous covers many high-volume industrial uses.
