Importance and applications of graphitized yarn

Published on 9/8/2020· Updated on 7/22/2026

Fibers, whether synthetic or natural, are subjected to carbonization and graphitization processes, similar to those of carbon fiber, to obtain graphitized yarns with properties such as resistance to high temperatures, high pressures, low coefficient of friction and thermal expansion, etc. However, carbon or graphite fiber yarns are also used.

Importance and applications of graphitized yarn

This is why this material is becoming indispensable for the manufacture of felts and other textile products capable of withstanding extremely high temperatures without burning. An important application for these carbonized yarns and textiles is in heat treatment furnaces and as an insulating material in industrial furnaces.

Industries in which graphitized yarn is used

Due to the above properties, graphitized yarn is vital in different types of industries, including:

  • Mining
  • Heat treatment
  • Wastewater and industrial services
  • Power generation (including nuclear)
  • Pulp and paper manufacturing
  • Refineries
  • Chemical and petrochemical
  • Military

Among the advantages of using graphite yarns are that graphite itself has high thermal conductivity, resists chemicals very well, resistance to oxidation, etc.

Graphitized yarn and carbon fiber

These two types of material have some differences in the benefits they offer and it is important to recognize them in order to choose the material that best suits specific needs and requirements.

While both materials are carbonized and graphitized to convert the raw material into carbonaceous material, the mechanical properties and other characteristics are very different. During the carbonization process, the chemical structure of the raw material is modified, making it resistant to elevated temperatures and chemical corrosion.

Graphitized yarns, on the one hand, have lower tensile strength. They are similar to stamens composed of fibers of lower quality than structural carbon fibers, also known as rovings.

Carbon fibers are subjected to different temperature ranges to produce different qualities. These qualities vary in mechanical strength or tensile strength. There are different classifications, including HT (high tension) or UHT ultra high tension carbon fibers.

While graphitized yarns and stamens are used for bonding or sewing soft felts in heat treatment furnaces, which serve as insulation, carbon fibers withstand high stresses and are used in demanding industries. Examples include the fuselage of the new Airbus aircraft, where more than 50% consist of technical fibers, or in the transportation industry such as automobiles and trains.

It should be noted that the production of carbon fibers and carbonized materials such as yarns and felts require large amounts of electrical energy, so their production is often located in countries with significant sources of accessible and renewable electrical energy.

In we commercialize carbonized textile materials and we are in the mission to develop these technologies in our country. If you are interested in our products, a consultant can contact you, please fill out the following form.

Limitations to consider

Performance depends on graphite grade, grain orientation, temperature, load, pressure, speed, and operating environment. Material selection should be confirmed for your actual process conditions.

Information needed for a quote

To guide selection or prepare a quote, ESGRAF typically needs:

  • Application and operating conditions (temperature, atmosphere, load).
  • Dimensions, technical drawing, or CAD file when applicable.
  • Required quantity.
  • Requested grade or material currently in use.
  • Observed issue with the previous part or lubricant, if any.

Spheroidal graphite cast iron - in which industries is it needed?

Cast irons are a group of ferrous alloys that have a large number of properties and have above 2% carbon. In these cases the carbon does not dissolve completely in the iron and solidifies in the form of graphite or iron carbide. One of the types is spheroidal graphite cast iron or nodular cast iron.

Graphite is not a uniform dielectric: it conducts well in the basal plane and behaves like an insulator perpendicular to the layers. That anisotropy explains its role in EDM, brushes, and thermal components.
