The importance of the metal-mechanic industry, lies in the processes it performs; since it is one of the most traditional economic activities in Mexico. In addition, it is a key piece for the development, modernization and progress in all industries, since it creates the parts that will be used to manufacture products for daily use.

Metalworking industry: main uses of graphite

The metal-mechanic industry transforms the raw material of metals to obtain sheets, wires, plates, etc. With the purpose of having as final product spare parts, auto parts for vehicles, machinery in general, nuts, etc.

It also provides machinery and materials to other industries. For example: manufacturing, construction, mining, agriculture, the automotive complex, etc.

In short, the metal-mechanical industry is vital in its branch, and that is why we are going to know what it is and what is its importance.

What is the metalworking industry?

This industry is defined by developing and producing industrial machinery, tools and the parts of the pieces of all metal industries. Using metal and iron alloys as the basic material.

The importance of the metal-mechanic industry, lies in the processes it performs; since it is one of the most traditional economic activities in Mexico. In addition, it is a key piece for the development, modernization and progress in all industries, since it creates the parts that will be used to manufacture products for daily use.

It is used in the construction of houses, buildings and roads, and in the manufacture of machinery and equipment. It is also used in watches, jewelry, televisions, computers, automobiles and trucks.

It should be noted that graphite plays an important role in this industry because of the variety of uses it has.

Main functions of the industry

  1. Manufacturing and assembly of products: such as spare parts and auto parts for vehicles. Refrigerators, industrial air conditioners, freezers. Radio receivers for telephony.
  2. Metal-mechanical solutions: in the petroleum, thermal and cement industries.
  3. Reconstruction of heavy machinery: thanks to the restoration of engines, chrome bars, repair of hydraulics and rectification of machinery in general.
  4. Creation of specific parts: either to assemble engines, gears, bolts or nuts, among an endless number of other components.

As you can see, the metal-mechanical industry is a key industry from which all other industries start, and not only because of its functions, but also because of its work in different sectors.

Graphite uses in the metalworking industry

One of the most common uses is for the elaboration of parts and molds by means of shape electroerosion or die sinking EDM.

This industrial process called electrical discharge machining or EDM (Electron Discharge Machining) consists of using graphite electrodes to melt the metal in the form of an electrode.

In other words, the graphite is subjected to traditional machining to give it shape and by means of EDM the shape is replicated to make molds.

These molds are used for the stamping of metal parts, as well as in plastic injection processes for a wide range of products.

It is important to mention that the metal-mechanical industry has been developing for more than 60 years in Mexico.

A key industry that serves as an economic indicator and its development is of great interest.

It is considered one of the pioneering industries, since it provides materials and inputs to other industries.

In we are specialists in graphite and we have different presentations and grades of graphite for EDM in stock for immediate delivery. In this way we are confident in our contribution to the technological and industrial development of the country. Contact us for a quick quote!

Limitations to consider

Performance depends on graphite grade, grain orientation, temperature, load, pressure, speed, and operating environment. Material selection should be confirmed for your actual process conditions.

Information needed for a quote

To guide selection or prepare a quote, ESGRAF typically needs:

  • Application and operating conditions (temperature, atmosphere, load).
  • Dimensions, technical drawing, or CAD file when applicable.
  • Required quantity.
  • Requested grade or material currently in use.
  • Observed issue with the previous part or lubricant, if any.

Spheroidal graphite cast iron - in which industries is it needed?

Cast irons are a group of ferrous alloys that have a large number of properties and have above 2% carbon. In these cases the carbon does not dissolve completely in the iron and solidifies in the form of graphite or iron carbide. One of the types is spheroidal graphite cast iron or nodular cast iron.

Anisotropic conductivity of graphite: conductor and insulator by direction

Graphite is not a uniform dielectric: it conducts well in the basal plane and behaves like an insulator perpendicular to the layers. That anisotropy explains its role in EDM, brushes, and thermal components.
