Carbon fibers are raw material for the manufacture of a wide range of objects for multiple industries. On this occasion we will explain the most relevant and well-known applications of this material.

Carbon fiber, production process and industrial applications

Carbon fiber is a synthetic fiber composed of fine carbon fibers (50-10 microns) and another polymer. This material obtains the properties of carbon, which translates into resistance, avoiding wear, humidity and heat in all types of products in which it is used.

This fiber is the raw material for the manufacture of a wide range of objects for multiple industries. On this occasion we will explain the most relevant and well-known applications of this material.

What is carbon fiber?

Basically they are thin carbon filaments, compacted or intertwined. Either in the form of: braid, untwisted, twisted, etc. These carbon fiber yarns are commonly known as rovings.

Carbon fiber rovings vary in number of filaments, between one thousand and twenty-four thousand thin sheets or more according to the application. They measure between 50 and 10 microns. In addition, they have a higher strength by weight ratio than steels and other metals.

Advantages of Carbon Fiber

This is why its characteristics are ideal for various industries such as: aerospace, automotive, aeronautics, jewelry, military, civil engineering, watches, shields (such as Ferrari's), fashion, etc. Its advantages, depending on the type of carbon fiber, are as follows:

  • Superior resistance This material guarantees a longer life time for applications in different sectors, because it is known for its resistance to corrosion, electricity, fire and is impervious to chemical elements.
  • nimal thermo-sensitivity Unlike metals such as steel and aluminum, carbon fiber does not expand or contract depending on environmental factors.
  • w maintenance Due to its resistance to extreme weather, as well as its shielding against scratches; it is a material that does not require as much care or revisions.
  • w density Reduces the weight of all types of parts or structures, providing support and rigidity, despite being a lightweight material compared to aluminum or steel.

A wide variety of parts use carbon fiber such as: bicycles, skates, drones, motorcycles, boats, computers, cellular phone parts, racquets, jewelry, etc.

Applications in different industries

Considering its properties, carbon fibers are used in various industries for the manufacture of composite materials. Composite materials are made by rovings or textiles of carbon fiber and a matrix material; joining everything together in woven or knitted fabrics.

The matrix reinforced with the textile structure creates extremely strong parts. These are produced through different processes of resin infusion, thermoforming, injection, among others; to form the final part in molds.

Some final applications include:

  1. Automotive components: the CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) method is used, among other impregnation processes. Which joins the fiber yarns according to the part; in molds compacted with resins. To obtain the desired piece.
  2. rospace components: D to their lightness and strength, technical fibers, especially carbon fibers have relegated other materials in the aerospace industry. The low weight of carbon composites reduces fuel consumption, increasing aircraft efficiency.
  3. drogen tanks: D to the internal pressure of a hydrogen cylinder, carbon fibers are required for the manufacture of light and strong tanks. Due to the increasing demand for this fuel of the future for aircraft and cars in general, the tanks must be kept extremely light and safe in case of crashes or accidents.

Importantly, its use is beneficial in many other demanding industries or processes.

Carbon fiber solutions

Fiber is an element that has many properties. Which make it perfect to work in many different industries. In fact, it is known in many industries as "miracle fiber".

Limitations to consider

Performance depends on graphite grade, grain orientation, temperature, load, pressure, speed, and operating environment. Material selection should be confirmed for your actual process conditions.

Information needed for a quote

To guide selection or prepare a quote, ESGRAF typically needs:

  • Application and operating conditions (temperature, atmosphere, load).
  • Dimensions, technical drawing, or CAD file when applicable.
  • Required quantity.
  • Requested grade or material currently in use.
  • Observed issue with the previous part or lubricant, if any.

Spheroidal graphite cast iron - in which industries is it needed?

Cast irons are a group of ferrous alloys that have a large number of properties and have above 2% carbon. In these cases the carbon does not dissolve completely in the iron and solidifies in the form of graphite or iron carbide. One of the types is spheroidal graphite cast iron or nodular cast iron.

Graphite is not a uniform dielectric: it conducts well in the basal plane and behaves like an insulator perpendicular to the layers. That anisotropy explains its role in EDM, brushes, and thermal components.
