Anthracite: everything you need to know about this material

What is anthracite?

Anthracite is defined as a natural coal with a shiny black color, fine texture, 95% carbon, low volatile substances and low sulfur content. Compared to other coals, it is the least polluting because it emits almost no smoke.

The filtration virtues of this mineral allow its use to regulate coagulation and sedimentation, in addition, it is a very durable material and resistant to high temperatures, ideal for treating hot and alkaline waters because it does not contain silica.

Uses of anthracite

Anthracite is a mineral that, like other coal derivatives, has specific characteristics that make it a valuable element for all types of industries. The main uses of anthracite are listed below:

  • It is burned in thermal power plants.
  • It is used in the production of gas for lighting.
  • Used in the production of synthetic rubber and dyes.
  • Water filtration.
  • Reducing agent in chemical processes.
  • Carbon adjustment in foundries.
  • Charging carbon in foundries.
  • Insufflation carbon.
  • An indispensable element in ferrous and non-ferrous foundries.

Characteristics of anthracite

Although this mineral can be confused with hard coal and obsidian, it maintains very particular characteristics that make it stand out from other coal derivatives.

  1. Heating value. Among the types of coal, it is one of the minerals that heats the most when burned, with an approximate 900ºC and produces from 13,000 to 15,000 Btu per pound.
  2. Non-clinker. This mineral maintains a free combustion and does not coke, does not expand and does not fuse.
  3. Difficult combustion. Compared to bituminous coals, it is less prone to combustion and burns with a short blue flame.

Industrial areas where anthracite is used

Energy: This mineral is used for heat generation in thermal power plants.
