Advantages of graphite spray for locks
Published on 8/31/2020· Updated on 7/22/2026
One of the problems with using any type of grease to lubricate a lock is that it will retain dust and eventually jam the mechanism even more. That is why the recommended and most commonly used option is to apply a spray of graphite powder from time to time as a lubrication.

With the passage of time and constant use it is common for locks to jam and we force the key thinking it will eventually open. This can damage/break the key and the lock completely so the solution is to use a lubricant. Below we will discuss the advantages of graphite lock spray and why it is the best choice in these cases.

What are the advantages of using a graphite spray lubricant?
Graphite is one of the forms in which carbon occurs and one of its main characteristics is that it is an excellent dry lubricant. Using graphite spray on locks has its advantages:
- It does not retain dust
- It does not drip on application
- It is easy to apply
- It has high strength and durability
- Friction between the sliding parts of the mechanism is immediately reduced.
- Withstands high temperatures
- High penetrating power
Procedure for applying graphite to a lock
If you do not want to spend or it is an unforeseen situation that you must solve immediately, you can apply graphite with a pencil and it is very simple: you only need the key of the lock and a sharp pencil.
All you have to do is rub the pencil lead, made of graphite, against the part of the key that goes into the lock. Being careful not to let the powder fall out, insert the key and move it slightly so that the powder falls inside.
Then take it out and insert it a couple of times so that the graphite spreads well and that's it. You can repeat the procedure as many times as necessary until the lock opens properly.
However, this is not the only option. You can also find graphite powder in a container with an applicator, which will allow you to introduce the powder inside the lock.
There is also a graphite spray or graphite powder spray available at hardware stores. This method is easier to apply since all you have to do is insert the tip of the applicator into the lock and the pressure of the container will spread the graphite inside the mechanism, lubricating it.
It is ideal for padlocks, door rails, belts, small gears, slides, glass gutters, firearms and all types of materials that are in constant friction.
Another presentation of graphite for lubrication is in oil and it is introduced to the lock by dripping the substance inside the mechanism that needs it.
At ESGRAF we are specialists in the world of carbon/graphite and offer a wide range of powders and lubricating suspensions in bulk for these applications. We also distinguish ourselves by offering 100% Mexican products and act as an alternative to imported products, with the best cost-benefit ratio.
Limitations to consider
Performance depends on graphite grade, grain orientation, temperature, load, pressure, speed, and operating environment. Material selection should be confirmed for your actual process conditions.
Information needed for a quote
To guide selection or prepare a quote, ESGRAF typically needs:
- Application and operating conditions (temperature, atmosphere, load).
- Dimensions, technical drawing, or CAD file when applicable.
- Required quantity.
- Requested grade or material currently in use.
- Observed issue with the previous part or lubricant, if any.
